The Domestic Violence Intervention Center was founded by five women in 2000 who desired to create a grassroots DV organization that would meet the growing need for services. The objective was to secure a facility to be used as a safe house to staff it, and run the organization with an all-volunteer staff. DVIC has offered services to the community since 2000 and opened the safe house (Harmony House) in 2007. Three weeks later the house closed due to inadequate staffing.  In September 2009, the BOD and the consultant team began the process of re-creating, re-developing and re-making the DVIC from “founding non-profit” into “managing organization.”

The shared leadership role is reflected throughout the DVIC and Harmony House.  The Co-Presidency and Co-Chair of all sub-committees allows the leadership to support one another and incorporates levels of checks, balances and accountability.

Today, the DVIC and Harmony House is a proactive, wellness-based organization.  “Partnering for Peace” in our homes, schools and community is reflected in the internal structure of the organization, i.e. from the shared leadership of the executive directors, presidents, chairpersons to the volunteer advocacy teams.

“Partnering for Peace” is part of our mission and reflects the understanding the DV is a complex and multi-faceted issue, and that there are many organizations who have joined the movement by way of necessity, pr; providing services where our current services may not reach victims.  DVIC intends to create, develop and nurture its’ community relations by pursuing active partnerships with other non-profits to reduce and eliminate barriers to services, as well as collaborate for funding.

A Key partnership is with the Citrus Heights Police Department.  The Chief of Police, Christopher Boyd, takes a pro-active approach to responding to domestic violence. He is an active BOD member and provides us with access to his office and department, day or night.  Together, we are creating and developing a specific training for a team of police officer and advocates to work in the community.

Another partnership key to DVIC success is with the City of Citrus Heights which resulted in the purchase of our safe house.  The business community, interfaith community and community services clubs have furnished, decorated and continued to sustain us by adopting part of our expenses.
